Boardwalks

An old industrial site has recently has been transformed into a exclusive residential subdivision. The developers wanted to provide the public with uninterrupted access to the steep river bank via a boardwalk. The site offered challenges in securing the boardwalk to the embankment and access for installing machinery. Geotechnical information showed that the embankment consisted of a filled site over limestone. Embankment gradient varied at approximately 40 to 45 degrees. The requirement was for a piling system that could be secured into the limestone and confirm each piles capacity ensuring that the piles were locked into the limestone. Screwpiles were selected as the best alternative. Vertical compression and raked tension piles with specifically designed Rock Engaging Technology (RET)  pile toes were used. Access for self driven installing machinery was not possible so a bobcat was specially prepared so it could be lowered down the embankment via a winch cable attached to remote earthmoving equipment at the top of the escarpment. Installation was completed ahead of schedule and was a total success demonstrating the versatility of screwpiles.
